Techlab 4.2

Back
This Exploration uses the interactive Java applet MIC TransformGrapher (below) to give you practice finding the equation of linear functions given their graph, as referenced on page 4-23 of your text.

Instructions

  • Please be patient while the program is loading. It can take up to 30 seconds to load and then run, depending on the available bandwidth. It runs much faster if you download it to your hard drive.
  • At the top of the applet is a button labeled f(x) = Ax + B. Select this button and make sure that the rad button is selected at the far right.
  • Click the "Graph" button at bottom of screen.
  • A linear function will be drawn (in red) on the grid. From the graph, find the value for A (gradient) and B (y-intercept) for this line.
  • Enter these values in the boxes labeled "A =" and "B =", and then click "Check".
  • The program will draw the straight line that you have suggested (in magenta) and then tell you if your values for A and B are correct. If either is wrong, two graphs will appear on the screen. You can correct your values for A and B and click "Check" again. If you are right, click "Graph" and you will be given a new graph to try.
